Description:

The ST7735R full color TFT display module is an SPI protocol based display with a resolution of 128*160 pixels and 1.8 inch size. It displays up to 262,144 different colors. The module has its own pixel-addressable frame buffer which means it can be used with all kinds of microcontroller with only 4 i/o pins. This module also comes by an SD card slot on which colored bitmaps can be loaded and easily displayed on the screen.
The TFT Display communicates with the microcontroller over SPI protocol, so you need to connect it to the SPI pins of the Arduino. Before connecting it directly to the 5v logic level of the Arduino, ensure that has a voltage regulator. Because the display may be destroyed if the version of the display you have does not have the regulator. If the display does not have a voltage regulator, you can use any logic level converter between the display and the Arduino

Pinout

This module has 13 pins:

  • VIN: Module power supply – 3.3-5V
  • GND: Ground
  • RST: LCD reset
  • CS: LCD chip select signal, for SPI protocol
  • D/C: Data selection signal
  • MOSI: SPI bus write data signal
  • MISO: SPI bus read data signal
  • SCK: SPI bus clock signal
  • LED+: Backlight control (Positive power supply)
  • LED-: Backlight control (Negative power supply)

You can see the pinout of this module in the image below.

Interfacing ST7735R 1.8 Inch TFT Display with Arduino

Step 1: Circuit

The following circuit shows how you should connect Arduino to this Display. Connect wires accordingly.

Step 2: Library

First, install the following libraries on Arduino IDE.

https://github.com/adafruit/Adafruit-ST7735-Library

https://github.com/adafruit/Adafruit-GFX-Library

Step 3: Code

Upload the following code to your Arduino.

This code is for testing the display and shows various graphical shapes and designs.

#include <Adafruit_GFX.h>  // Core graphics library
#include <Adafruit_ST7735.h>  // Hardware-specific library
#include <SPI.h>

// For the breakout, you can use any 2 or 3 pins
// These pins will also work for the 1.8" TFT shield
#define TFT_CS     10
#define TFT_RST 9 // you can also connect this to the Arduino reset
                      // in which case, set this #define pin to -1!
#define TFT_DC     8

// Option 1 (recommended): must use the hardware SPI pins
// (for UNO thats sclk = 13 and sid = 11) and pin 10 must be
// an output. This is much faster - also required if you want
// to use the microSD card (see the image drawing example)
Adafruit_ST7735 tft = Adafruit_ST7735(TFT_CS,  TFT_DC, TFT_RST);

// Option 2: use any pins but a little slower!
#define TFT_SCLK 13 // set these to be whatever pins you like!
#define TFT_MOSI 11 // set these to be whatever pins you like!
//Adafruit_ST7735 tft = Adafruit_ST7735(TFT_CS, TFT_DC, TFT_MOSI, TFT_SCLK, TFT_RST);
